Created by Godfrey Dowson, this black and white deck is said to depict the Golden Dawn’s astrological attributes with further sephirotic, angelic, geomantic, numerical, and kabbalistic elements. This is the same group that housed the teachings, discussions and artwork of Rider, Waite and Smith. Based in the United Kingdom in the early 1900s, this secret society was intent on studying the mysteries of our universe.

This deck contains the classic 78 tarot cards you'll find in most decks, but often with variations on their titles or descriptions. It includes a 72-page guide book rich in historical spiritual theory. It includes several tarot spreads, including the Celtic Cross layout. You'll also find a chart of elemental and astrological symbols, a diagram of the ten spheres and 22 Hebrew Letters of the 22 Paths of the Tree of Life. This deck is recommended for the more advanced tarot reader. You are welcome to try it as a beginner but you might become overwhelmed or confused (but hey, you also might appreciate a good challenge). This deck offers us a portal into an infinite well of metaphysical knowledge. You could study it for weeks and not even make a dent. It will soon become your favorite and most troublesome deck as it will have you thinking into the wee hours of the night.

I’ll be honest with you: this deck challenges me. It’s a love/hate relationship if there ever was one. I like how this deck pushes me to study new spiritual philosophies, languages and numbers. However, it also drives me crazy! There is so much going on and I find something new each time I look at this deck. I’m appreciative that it’s in black and white, but I do wonder what it would look like in color. Perhaps they’ll do an anniversary edition one day. If you buy this deck please tell me your experience with it below. I’m curious how others interact and experience this deck!
