Arthur and Pamela met in England in the early 20th century in the Order of the Golden Dawn. This secret society, heavily influenced by Kabbalah, was intent on studying magic, mysticism, and the mysteries of the world. Mr. Waite, a respected occult author and Ms. Coleman, a renown artist, paired up to create seventy-eight allegorical paintings. Published by William Rider in 1909, this iconic deck has inspired healers and mystics from around the world.

I didn’t like the Rider-Waite deck for a long time. In the original printing I received there was barely a whisper about Pamela Coleman Smith. The injustice! I have since had the pleasure of reading the book Pamela Coleman Smith -The Untold Story, by Stuart R. Kaplan. In this tome I discovered that Pamela didn’t create the deck for fame or glory. No, she was happy to be a part of a project that offered wisdom, comfort and solace to so many. If only she knew the impact she’s had on us all.

Magical Discoveries

There are so many tiny details in this deck it’s easy to miss them. I have a huge fondness for the white wolf who joins the traveler under The Moon. I also have deep appreciation for the black cat who sits by the feet of the Queen of Wands. What is your favorite symbol in this deck? If so inclined, please comment in the reviews!
